Safety in Cosmetics

Did you know that... on any given day a consumer may use from 9 to 25 different cosmetic products, containing more than 200 different chemical compounds.  How these our bodies react to these chemicals is a matter of some concern. On Saturday, September 9, 2006, Inanna Herbal Remedies gave a presentation to Vancouver film and television (IATSE 891) union makeup artists on the subject of Safety In Cosmetics. This same presentation, created by the Environmental Working Group (EWG) and the Breast Cancer Fund, was given to Hollywood makeup artists on June 25th of that year.

"Although, of course, aware that there are many toxins present in our environment, I hadn't realized the extent to which their effects are cumulative. Actors are faced with a double dilemma in skin care. Although these women want to look good, and in fact have careers that depend on it, yet they are under great stress, due to the long hours they must work. In many cases their complexions show the signs of stress, and we must try to help them. Even a small amount of a toxic ingredient applied to sensitive faces will have a very negative impact. We, as makeup artists, must do our best to put the safest ingredients possible on their skin."

..Hollywood makeup artist Estreya Kesler.

Many of us find that we are susceptible to environmental toxins. Reactions often appear first on the skin, the body's largest organ, but can become much more serious. Skin problems are increasing in frequency and in severity. Let's all make an effort to read those cosmetics labels, find out what's actually in our personal care products, including toothpaste, hair care, nail polish. And then, let's do some research into the ingredients, and their level of safety.  A good place to start is the following link: http://www.ewg.org/reports/skindeep.    Skin Deep is a personal care product safety guide with in-depth information on 14,841 products - 1,032 brands of lotion, lip balm, deodorant, sunscreen and other popular products - and the 7,093 ingredients that form them. Note: some results may surprise you!
